Hirst Lock
From eyesore
to beauty spot
The surroundings of Hirst Lock had become so tatty, with white vans
parked on a muddy patch of bare ground, that visitors, canal users and
residents usually passed by as quickly as possible..
In many ways it was a metaphor for a widely held view - Hirst Wood
didn’t live up to its smarter neighbour, Saltaire.
Members of Hirst Wood Regeneration Group decided to try and make
the Lock a place to be enjoyed rather than avoided and after some
lobbying, cajoling, wheedling and fund raising they succeeded
The links on this page will tell you the story of how it happened.
