From eyesore to beauty spot
The surroundings of Hirst Lock had become so tatty, with white vans parked on a muddy patch of bare ground, that visitors, canal users and residents usually passed by as quickly as possible.. In many ways it was a metaphor for a widely held view - Hirst Wood didn’t live up to its smarter neighbour, Saltaire. Members of Hirst Wood Regeneration Group decided to try and make the Lock a place to be enjoyed rather than avoided and after some lobbying, cajoling, wheedling and fund raising they succeeded The links on this page will tell you the story of how it happened.
