Come along and see for yourself
The group meets on the first
Thursday of every month at
6.30 p.m. at the Hub on
Carlton Avenue Everyone is
welcome to come along and
have his or her say.
Topics range from how to
deal with the curse of dog
muck to planning a family fun
day; from car parking and rat running to the local bus service. In
other words, anything and everything, no matter how big or small,
that concerns the people of Hirst Wood.
The meetings are informal and you will be given a warm welcome
Striving to make Hirst Wood safer, cleaner, healthier and an even better place to live
Hirst Wood is a community of just over 600
households to the west of Shipley and Saltaire in
West Yorkshire. It is an area surrounded by great
natural beauty, including the Leeds-Liverpool canal,
the River Aire and the ancient woodland that gave the
area its name.
Hirst Wood Regeneration Group was set up early in
2000 with the aim of improving facilities in the
neighbourhood and building a sense of pride in our
community.
In giving HWRG their Community Heroes Award for 2008-9, Shipley Area Office
described the group as “an asset to the community. The members listen to and
prioritise the needs of the residents, then gather the resources necessary and
work persistently towards their goals.”
The first major project the group undertook was to build a playground for young
children in the playing field at the junction of Hirst Lane and Dallam Avenue.
Since then we have added an all-weather sports area and a ‘pod’ where young
people can hang out without bothering anyone.
As well as arranging summer activities for young people and canal trips for older
residents who don’t get out much, we transformed the mucky area next to Hirst
Lock into a pleasant garden and an area in the middle of the estate being used
as a rubbish dump into a wild-flower orchard.
Our most ambitious project (to date) turned a boggy, overgrown field next to
Hirst Lock into a nature area that everyone can enjoy.
